As you look at the map for poverty and poorly performing schools, I encourage you to also look at these the maps on this site which show high crime areas. Not surprisingly, these are the same areas.
This map shows where poor schools are, and identifies the different racial demographics. Research shows that Hispanic and African American youth are dropping out of high school at high rates. Thus, volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs are needed in these areas, with strategies that combine mentoring and enrichment with skill building that can help young people succeed in work and careers.
