Hi Everyone,

I am from Surrey, UK (just south of London) and I am trying to connect volunteers interested in supporting tutor / mentoring programs over here. I have started to meet with people from university, community learning, business colleagues and they often would like to know more.

I first came across Tutor / Mentor Connection on PLENK2010 and found this great tool called TrailMeme.

So I have started to create a short trail showing some areas that I would find interesting to either talk with colleagues about and share the trail with them so they can explore further.

Its really easy to create a trail, just add a short headline called a marker, then add the web address URL that it belongs to. Others following the trail can add to it, add comments, share with others in many different ways. I started by creating a Wordle based on the "Starting a Program" essay on Tutor/Mentor Exchange then went from there:

Any thoughts, feedback, please feel free to add directly into the trail or here,

Thanks

Nicola

  • Thanks Bradley, it was a great find by Eva- lots of possibilities
  • This is cool; a nice way to go seamlessly from a Flash presentation, to a PDF, to a PowerPoint, to a YouTube video, etc. Thanks for sharing.
  • Thanks for the great suggestions !
  • I wrote about this at http://mappingforjustice.blogspot.com/2011/04/different-kind-of-map...

What I suggest you might try is focusing on what issue in Surrey would be important enough for people to want to spend time in these sites learning what the T/MC does so they can duplicate it where they are. I don't know the demographics or youth population there so am not sure how much focus there needs to be on helping kids. In the blog articles on this section you can see that I follow media stories with my own articles, letting the media build part of the public awareness needed to draw attention to what I'm writing about. You and others could draw from your own local media in a similar manner.

  • Thanks, I will send out to a few people and ask for their feedback too, maybe they will have some insights about what they were trying to understand and learn.
  • This is really interesting. You managed to find some great web sites.  I think people can take the guided tour and follow your own path, but it seems to me we still need to find ways to motivate them to take this journey, and provide discussion leaders to help build understanding until new followers/learners are confident in what they were learning and able to lead others.
