Convention follow up

Last night Senator McCain ended his speech with a call to service. Today I received email messages from Joe Bieden and Barack Obama, asking for $5 donations to support their campaigns. Earlier in the week with Gustav threatening to be a bigger disaster, I received an email from Obama encouraging me to send $10 to the Red Cross. Why can't both candidates make this a consistent part of their

Shooting Touches Cabrini Connections' Family

Last weekend three more Chicago kids were killed in street violence. One of those was a close friend of Cassina Sanders who works at Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection. Read about this on Cassina's Spark Change blog. The editorial in today's SunTimes says "Everyone Should have Someone to Go to" referring to a social worker or counselor in a public school. The front page of the

Scools (and communities) must confront root causes of violence

The feature editorial in today's Chicago SunTimes is headlined with "Schools must confront root causes of violence". I added the (and communities) part because I don't think schools can solve this problem without strategic involvement of businesses, universities, faith groups, and others who live in regions of the city and suburbs where there is little or now poverty. I use maps like this one

CEO becomes teacher

In today's Chicago Tribune I read an article about how the ex CEO of H&R Block left his $1 million corporate job to teach in inner city schools. During the May 2008 Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference, one of the speakers was David Ginsburg, a former volunteer with Cabrini Connections, who now is an educator in a Philadelphia Charter School. Arthur Mollenhauer, Chief Executive

Telling Story Using Blogs - Connecting Strategies

How many small non profit organizations are in cities like Chicago, doing wonderful things to help youth and families, but struggling to find consistent funding, new volunteers, and public attention to support their good work? How many have a web site, but not much traffic? In the retail business world, that's like having a great store, with fantastic products or services, but no customers,

Introductions: History of Tutor/Mentor Connection

This weekend I was invited to join a mentoring list serve hosted by Dr. David DuBois, at University of Illinois, Chicago. I started typing an introduction, and found that it is longer than most people might read. Thus, I'm posting the introduction here and anyone who wants to take the time, can read it . I'm Dan Bassill, President of a Chicago non profit called Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection The Cabrini Connections part is a site ba… Continue

Read the Blogs of Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection staff and volunteers

In every email I point to my own http://tutormentor.blogspot.com and I hope you all read that occasionally. Each month more than 1200 visitors go to that blog, coming from all over the world. However, I'm not the only one at Cabrini Connections writing a blog. I've encouraged our staff, interns, and volunteers to also write blogs because they offer a fresh perspective, and they attract readers from their own personal networks. Here are the blogs they are writing: El Da'Sheon Nix, Administrati… Continue

Talent of volunteers and interns expands capacity of non profit

I encourage you to visit http://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2008/06/conference-presentation-created-by.html and view a flash presentation about the Tutor/Mentor Conference, which was created for my organization by two student interns from Korea. This does a great job of showcasing the conference and drawing attention to some of the tutor/mentor programs who participate on panels and delivered workshops. I… Continue

It takes a Village ... who are we trying to reach?

I created a new concept map today, showing the many different groupings of people/organizations with an interest in helping kids born in poverty move through school and into jobs and careers over a 25 year period of support. You can view the charg here In the chart I included links to information sections on the T/MC web site, where you could find links to other… Continue

Hi Dan,
Our school year begins in late January, and ends in early December, so we're right in the middle.
Please have a look at our website: www.ikamvayouth.org and our last annual report: http://www.ikamvayouth.org/files/active/0/IkamvaYouth_AnnualReport_2007.pdf

Thanks!

I thought the May 29 and 30 conference went well. I went to Atlanta on Sunday for the National Conference on Volunteerism and Community Service, where my goals were the same as for the Chicago event. I was just in a different role as participant, not organizer.

Above is one of the diagrams that I created as I was listening to one of the speakers at the conference. This is a process I go through at every event I attend. I'm always thinking of how to link the people I'm listening to, the ideas I'm hearning and the people I meet to the goals of the Tutor/Mentor Connection, or to the goals of the Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service and of the national leadership on volunteerism and community service.

In my http://tutormentor.blogspot.com blog I'll recap the national and Chicago conference over the next week or so. At the same time I'll be sending out email follow up to individuals, and to my entire email list. Thus, if you add content here or to other sites you're hosting, my outreach can draw people to your ideas, Marylin and to others who participated in the Chicago conference or visit our web sites.

Arts mentoring can be a great way to get kids and volunteers connected, teach communications skills and build awareness for your program. Visit the http://cabriniblog.blogspot.com and you can see photos from an arts and video festival held on Feb. 8th in Chicago.

Take the Tutor/Mentor Survey and help us understand the needs of tutor/mentor programs in Chicago and other cities.

At http://jordan-webb.net/tmc you can find two surveys. One helps us understand the differences between programs, as well as common challenges faced by most programs.

The second is intended to help facilitate collaboration and problem solving, so all tutor/mentor programs can constantly improve their ability to help kids in their community.
