Northwestern University Tutor/Mentor Connection - archive

In 2007 we launched a separate Ning site (see archive) to try to connect alumni, students, faculty at Northwestern University around Tutor/Mentor Connection strategy. The forum never gained much traction and was taken off line in 2014. If you're from Northwestern and want to support growth of youth tutor/mentor programs in Chicago or other cities, join in here.

The most difficult part about building an on-line community is stimulating interaction among members. This community is even more challenging, because it's purpose is to stimulate actions that help volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs grow in Chicago and other cities. In the NU group we're trying to enlist students, faculty and alumni from Northwestern to help raise funds for Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection, and for similar programs in other parts of the city. There's plenty of wealth at NU, and plenty of talent. What can members of this group do to unleash that wealth and talent and focus it on tutor/mentor programs?

We've just launched our 2009 Holiday Fund. Donations can be made here. Or, the NU group can set up their own campaign to raise funds for CC, T/MC.

What are you doing to motivate others to become involved in helping inner city kids make better life choices? If there are no tutor/mentor programs, because there is too little funding, how do we expect kids to raise themselves?

Come to the conference at Northwestern on Nov. 19 and 20 and learn how to map your network, and recruit members to help build tutor/mentor programs in all high poverty neighborhoods.

Attention all current Northwestern Students and Northwestern University Alumni: The November Tutor/Mentor Conference will be at Norris University Center on Northwestern's Evanston Campus!

The November 2009 Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking
Conference is happening in less than three months, on Thursday and
Friday November 19th and 20th.
In order for the conference to happen though, we need your help. We
are currently putting together a conference planning committee. We
need people to help with:
- Finding speakers and panelists for workshops and keynotes
- Fundraising and finding sponsors for the conference
- Marketing, public relations, and reaching out to the media
- Technology support for improving the website.
If you're interested in helping out with the conference, you can call
312-492-9614 or e-mail Nicole White at
nicolewhite.cabrini@gmail.com
We're hoping to have a meeting in two weeks (the week of
September 7th-11th) here at Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor
Connection.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely yours,
The Tutor/Mentor Connection

Cabrini Connections is supported by more than a dozen people who attended Northwestern University in undergrad or graduate school. Three of our staff, El Da'Sheon Nix, Chris Warren and Nicole White are all alumni. Gabe Rodriguez and Carol Klingler Ebel, from our Board of Directors, attended Kellogg School of Management. Cortland Madock, organizer of the year end dinner is a current Kellogg student. Nikhil Marathe started this business school connection discussion in 2005. These are just a few.

We have three interns from the University of Michigan working at Cabrini Connections this week. They have formed a ning group which I hope some of you will visit. If we can connect students, faculty and alumni from different universities we can share ideas across these groups and build more innovative strategies to help kids.

This map shows locations of organizations who participated in the Nov. 21 conference held in Chicago. It shows that there is representation from all parts of the city, but that it is low in the South Side, where there is a lot of poverty but few volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs.

For people who live in other cities, do you have someone creating map reports like this with a goal of mobilizing resources to support existing and emerging tutor/mentor programs in high poverty areas?

Hi everybody! I just wanted to say how happy I was to meet several NU alumni at the November Tutor/Mentor Leadersip and Networking Conference. Please read my blog post at http://nicolecabrini.blogspot.com and post a comment if you blogged about the conference yourself.

We hosted two teams of Northwestern University freshmen at
Cabrini Connections this week. I spoke to both groups and they had great questions. I hope one or two will join this group and bring their questions and involvement to this forum.

I encourage you to read the blogs Chris Warren, NU, 2008, is writing about the Tutor/Mentor Connection.

Hello everyone! I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Nicole White and I am Chris's predecessor, as the Northwestern Public Interest Program Fellow for 2006-2007 at Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection. I am so happy that we are starting a Northwestern Tutor/Mentor Connection group here because I feel, as a Northwestern alum and an employee here at Cabrini Connections that Northwestern and Cabrini Connections have much to benefit in collaborating with each other. I look forward to seeing how this group will grow in the weeks to come.
