Paula Dirkes earned her Bachelors degree in secondary education from Michigan State University and her Masters degree in Human Performance Improvement from the University of Michigan. She has worked in non-profits and for-profits before she got involved in a variety of volunteer mentoring roles. Since 2001 Paula got involved in community-based mentoring, faith-based mentoring and school-based mentoring. The focus of her social enterprise company - Solid Pathways Consulting, LLC - is to further the missions of youth organizations by empowering more adults to show up for kids. She is an author, speaker and trainer on a mission to make youth mentoring a social norm versus the exception on this planet by helping adult role models get past their 'buts'. Her most recent book - Mentor Me! The Complete Guide for Women Who want to Mentor Girls - was published in January 2012 and is an Amazon.com bestseller. She lives in Berkley, Michigan.
What do you hope to learn, or share, on this forum?
Not only what products or services would serve youth mentoring professionals, but also what serves volunteer mentors - specifically women mentors and male mentors. I think I am researching the different beliefs held and messages given to men vs. women about volunteering and working with children they are not related to.

Paula, thanks for joining the forum. While there are over 400 members, there's not a lot of interaction. If you browse the group section you will see how I coach college interns on projects that share their understanding of ideas I've originated in blogs posts, which focus on generating visibility and a larger flow of volunteers and donors to support programs in many neighborhoods. I feel that any member can duplicate this, involving youth from their own community, and focusing the presentations on their own city. As more people do this we will be working collectively to build the resources we all need to launch and sustain mentor-rich k-12 youth programs.
