Thank you Daniel for checking out the site and sharing your work here. The Beyond the Bricks project was conceived with the goal of promoting the much needed conversation around solutions to helping young people get more engaged in their education, and as you know, this really does take the village. We are presently raising funds and preparing a tour of the film, which will be accompanied by some of the participants in the film and others to speak to diverse audiences about what the issues are and innovative, practical ideas to address this very critical and long standing problem. I have uploaded the trailer for the film, hope to get more folks involved.

Yes, daniel, we did in the past for 1-2 yrs then the local burmese pastors convinced the vol. staff to not push our mentoring approach since they wanted them to work right away without taking any responsibility so they could get their 10% tithe plus a job finders fee. This led me to believe that having volunteers was not the only way to proceed and we will be looking for funding soon to have better control over the organization's direction.
Thanks for your comment Dan..

Thanks Dan. I'd love to use this forum to keep you and others up-to-speed as I develop ideas on Mapping for Justice. Hopefully I'll have something to share by the end of the weekend as I poke around for research and see where I can get people involved.

By the way, I'm very curious to find out how the Golf Benefit turned out -- looks like it was an overall success! Anything you would've done differently? We can connect later -- can't wait to see the pics!

Hi Dan:

Just wanted to let you know that in the next few days, I will be wrapping up my service as an AmeriCorps*VISTA and will be moving on. I would like to thank you and the Tutor Mentor Connections in being supportive over the last year and helping Mentor Kenosha & Racine grow. I would still like to be active in the Tutor Mentor Connections. Feel free to email me at ewitalison@yahoo.com to keep in contact with me.

Also, even though I am moving on, Mentor Kenosha & Racine will still be very active with your program. Michelle, the new VISTA will be in contact with you and your program.

Hi Daniel,
I appreciate your time to reply my email. I visited the website which you mentioned to me in your email. I had much better understanding about this Tutor/Mentor program.
As CEO, one of the volunteer founders, you have been contribute all your life, time in building up this net work, including reply email to each member who signed in as a new member. You have gain a great respect from me.
There will be an education system and culture issues involved in building up this net work in difference countries. However, the benefit of helping student after school is obvious from what you have done. I will pay attention to your update and see what I can do in local region.
Kind Regards
Lili

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the welcome.

I sure wouldn't mind using my skills to be of help to the youth and spreading the word round about your good works.

Plus, am using ma journalistic experience to give youth theoretical and practical understanding of the media-newspapers as a bias. I would gladly do a workshop for the youth giving them a background into journalism practice in Uganda. Plus they would gain skills on the news gathering process, interviewing skills, story crafting skills and newspaper design. Please send me an email should this be of interest to 'your' youth. We can discuss this separately via email, thxs.

Our plan right now is to sit down with several existing afterschool programs and ask what their needs are and then see if we can get a weekly or bi-weekly updated schedule of when they need tudors and if they need any particular subject taught (math, english, science etc.) With this information, we hope to keep a consistently updated schedule of needs that we can then take to the students on our campus.

As students, one of the hardest parts about volunteering seems to be finding out where the need is and then finding a time that will fit in between your busy class schedule. We hope to at least minimize this problem and be that connecting point for students. Our end goal is to set up long term relationships between university students and the programs in the community.

Do you think this is a good way to go about things? Any suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks!
-Austin

Hi Daniel,
Sorry being later to response!
Briefly, I was educated in China from primary school to high school. I completed Diploma in Economics, Major in Industrial Enterprise Management in 1986. In 1990 I came to Australia study English thereafter I completed Bachelor degree in Business, Major in accounting.
I worked in accounting field for 12 years in China and continually had been working in accounting professional in Australia.
I am very interested in this Tutor/Mentor Connection. I wish I could contribute something for our next generation, especially, those who were got lost direction in their life. I haven’t involved any education program yet and wishing could start something here.
I strong believe that the quality of person become from one’s education background. It consists of family education, school education, society education, living environment and life experience.
We always talk about product quality, beautiful design, durable and convenient to use, etc. Then, what is person’s quality as a human being?

Lili

Boy, I've worked off and on with Cheryl Honey and her Community Weaving initiative for many years now, and I'm glad to see it begin to get some traction. I'm not completely clear on what role I'll have going forward, but it is exciting to discover programs like yours. I will keep checking in to see how I might be able to help along the way.

I am intrigued by the idea of concept-mapping that was mentioned in an email to me. I can't wait to see what it looks like on one of the mentor org. websites - a way to visualize the roads to success for youth in poverty, etc. Thanks for the info!!!
