Tutor/Mentor Connection

Connect knowledge, volunteers, youth and make a difference.

For the past seven years (since 2006) interns from various universities  have worked with Tutor/Mentor Connection for periods of a week to a semester. During that time they have built their own understanding of the goals and strategies of the T/MC and have then created visualizations that reinterpret these ideas in a new, and hopefully, more interesting, way.

The graphic shown at the left was done in Spring 2012 to illustrate the growth of members on this Ning network since 2007. The project report can be seen here.

During the first week of an internship new interns are asked to review work done by previous interns and to create a visual introduction of themselves.  Visit this page and read the introductions posted by past interns, then read their final messages to see how they have grown in their understanding and in new tools they have learned to use.

Visit this blog and scroll through posts going back to 2006 and meet our interns. The first week assignment for each intern is to create a presentation that introduces him/herself

In October 2011, I began posting illustrated essays on http://www.scribd.com/daniel-f-bassill-7291 which had originally been posted in the library on the Tutor/Mentor Institute site. As of October these had been viewed 27,600 times by people from around the world.

During the 2013 and future internships my goal is that students will continue to work on network analysis projects and will also develop ways to use social media to increase the number of students also doing these projects as well as the number of people reading them and then spending their own resources and talent to help high quality, volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs thrive in more places.

If you are a student, educator, business leader from Chicago or another city and you want to join in on this project, just register to become a member then join this group and introduce yourself. As I provide more suggestions for 2013 projects you can begin to choose which you will work on and we can discuss new ways of sharing these with more people.

I'm interviewing interns for the spring 2013 project and have created this animation as an example of ways to use different technologies to communicate ideas, and to provide an introduction to the type of research, learning and sharing I hope they will do.  Visit this page to view the video.

During the Spring Internship period we host a Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference. This time it will be June 7.  Interns will help with the conference and take photos. See this albumfrom a previous conference.

This project is open to students from any high school or college, as well as to youth in non-school programs. You can participate virtually, and don't need to be formally involved in a program with me.

One of our Interns has very creative video making skills. One suggestion I have for him is that he create 30 second PSAs describing projects done by previous interns. Research on this can be done by our second intern who has done poverty research in the past.

This is the final week forByeonghui Kim and Kyungryul Kim who are college students from South Korea working with me for the past six weeks.  The graphic at the left is from one of six projects created by these two.  You will be able to view these here or here, as well as in the Ning pages for each student.

As more people view these we hope the strategies we share will be adopted and used to make non-school, volunteer-based tutoring, mentoring and learning programs available in more places.  We also hope more students in various high schools, colleges and youth serving organizations will see that they can create their own versions of these same projects.

As more and more versions of these are created we teach the youth who create these strategies they can apply in the future, while we increase the number of adults who provide the resources and talent to make youth serving programs available in more places, with staff who are constantly improving what they do, by learning from what others are doing in different places.

This graphic is from an introduction of past interns, which is a Prezi format visualization created by Byeonghui Kim.  View here.

At the right is a screen shot from a video created by Kyungryul Kim to introduce work done by past interns.   View it now.

Both of these projects can be viewed on the Tutor/Mentor Connection Intern Blog, along with other articles related to interns since 2005.

During the May-June 2013 internship we will hold a Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference at the Metcalfe Federal Building, 77 W. Jackson. Interns will participate and create a video from interviews they do at the conference. This animation shows questions to ask.

We have two new interns from IIT and Korea who started last week. Both have created introductions which are posted on their blogs.  Meet  Kyungryul Kim and Byeong Hui Kim.   I posted the introductions on this Intern blog.

I'm Kyungryul Kim from South Korea. This is my first video for Tutor/Mentor Connection. I looked the past presentation about Tutor/Mentor connection, and made this video to introduce that. more information is in http://www.tutormentorexchange.net/images/PDF/servicelearning2011.pdf
