Tutor/Mentor Connection

Connect knowledge, volunteers, youth and make a difference.

In this group I'd like to collect stories written by youth and volunteers who have been part of volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs in the past. You can post a story, or a link to a web site where you post your story.  You can also create a page on this site and write a blog to tell your story in many chapters.

The stories of mentoring and tutoring can present a rich collection of experiences and attract the attention of philanthropist and future volunteers to the programs you were part of, and to programs in other places where they are needed.

Please help collect these stories. If we get enough in 2012 I'll create a new discussion in 2013 so we can collect new stories every year.

I first became a volunteer tutor/mentor in 19 73 when I was matched with Leo, a 4th grade boy living in the Cabrini Green area of Chicago. I became the leader of that program in 1975 and continued leading a tutor/mentor program reaching kids from Cabrini Green until July 2011. I created an alumni site for Cabrini Connections a few years ago and have posted a number of pictures from the past. I'd like to find some former students/volunteers to take ownership of this.

Based on my experiences leading a single program I created the Tutor/Mentor Connection in 1993 and the Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC in 2011 to help similar programs reach kids in all poverty neighborhoods of Chicago. In 1998 I went to the internet with this so now the information is available to people all over the world. This time line shows growth since 1965.

Received this message from Kaeaiya Coleman Holmes, who was one of the first students to join the Cabrini Connections program in 1993 when she was entering 7th grade.

"I am in school working on my Master of Nursing with an emphasis in Leadership in Health care Delivery systems...Just accepted a new job as the nurse manager of SGMC inpatient Rehab so exciting and scary at the same time being accountable for a unit 24 hours of the day and budgeting and making schedules so please pray for me Im 32 and have just stepped into this organization 3 years a go and have went from floor nursing to charge nurse now to Nurse manager...Husband is in school at the UofF working on his electrical engineering degree and I officially have an 8th grader and 4th grade.

Still looking for a program in this area that works with the youths as Cabrini Connections did to impact youths would love to be involved with a young child and make a difference in their life...I very much am still in touch with Gena and Valerie love those two so much and the program has truly made a positive impact on my life....."
