I would love to have some speakers on social networks. And I think it would be useful to get them involved with the ning.

I would also be interested in how to set up a ning. I believe it may be a useful tool for our volunteers.

This is a community about 30 miles southwest of Atlanta. I found your website through a literacy website, called literacyconnections, headed by Cathy Puett Miller, also a member of this site. SO i came here in a very convoluted way, but am happy that i did! . I did see some members who live in Georgia, so i may connect with them. This is a great resource! You do a lot of wonderful things in Chicago.....my organization also sponsors a grief and loss camp for children who are being raised by their grandparents, and i believe there is a camp in Chicago, as well. It is associated with a university there.

I was a Field Artillery Officer - 1st Infantry Division over in Germany. Then I did a Brigade S4 (Logistics) job to end my career which I really enjoyed.

I like your ideas...great stuff. We have about 100+ volunteers and about 120+ Teenage Youth weekly at our programs, right now our programs are run out of the Solheim Center at Oak and Wells on Moody Bible's campus. They give us the Gyms most of Monday night. Our program starts at 6:30PM with kids having to be in the door by 7:00PM and goes to 9:00PM. We do it most every Monday night.

In the summer, we have more of a relaxed version of our programing at Beckman field also on that same corner.

We try to get to a 1 to 1 mentorship connection with the youth, and to volunteer with your program, you have to be there each Monday evening, for a year minimum. A big commitment, but we have a great group.

We also require and train them to meet up with the youth "outside the walls" we call it, at least 1-2 hours a week, to build a real life relationship at school, in the neighborhoods, and outside of our programming.

-Improving parent involvemnet
-How to motivate students that are struggling in every subject/are not serious about their education
-Classroom management
-Fundraising
-Dealing with students that exhibit anger management issues and violent behavior
-Being a better partner with the schools

I have been looking for additional tutor/mentor workshops and professional development opportunities for my staff in the Chicago area, but I have been somewhat unsuccessful so far.
Can anyone offer any insight on how to tap into such opportunities? or
Are there any programs that are having trainings that our program can collaborate to attend?

It would be great to get the Cornell group involved on this site, as well as any others who are interested. If you visit the groups section you'll see one for Acacia Fraternity. The goal of this is to recruit members and alumni from different Acacia chapters to the site so they can learn from me and apply what they learn to help build volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs in the towns where their chapters are located. This concept can repeated in many, many ways. It just takes one or two people from each place to understand their power to make things happen.

I would also like to connect you with faculty at Cornell Cornell where I did my undergraduate work. They have a Chicago experience as well as a new civic engagement program that was started in honor of two of my mentors who retired recently. Dr. Richard Peterson and Dr. Chris Carlson. Dr. Carlson is now working as Dean of the college. Also, I did my Masters of Arts at UIC. Dr. Dennis Rosenbaum was my mentor there. He's very active in safety work in Chicago. I was teaching today and doing a hundred other miscellaneous tasks so I didn't get a chance to send out a mass invite. As soon as deadlines are met I will get on it. thanks.
