"Thanks for posting this. The map below shows more of the articles written in the Chicago papers last week about this issue. Few of them pointed readers to places where they could donate time and talent. Thus, we need to create that media ourselves.…"

Hi Laura,

I hope you'll join the LA Mentoring Group and help me build the conversation there. I'm working on a four part strategy.

a) build a list of existing tutor/mentor programs in specific areas, like LA, Chicago, etc.

b) build visits to web sites that these programs host, which tell who they are, what they do, what people can do to help them

c) encourage people to act in certain ways at key times each year.

For instance, over the next few weeks, we want people to reach out and offer to volunteer as tutors/mentors; in Sept/Oct we want them to add tutor/mentor programs to workplace fund raising campaigns and in Nov/Dec. we want them to reach out as donors. At the end of the school year we want programs to come together to share best practices, and to build business partnerships that help each program get better as the cycle starts again the following year.

It's up to people in each group to build the database of programs in their area, which could just consist of links to web sites of programs operated by you and others like you. It's up to all of us to find ways to increase web traffic, and to help people understand the ways they can volunteer time, talent and/or dollars to help one or more programs stay connected to kids and volunteers and get better each year.

If we can grow the number of people who take these roles, we help hundreds of programs and thousands of kids.
