"You have made a good start on this. In each of the categories, you'd want to try to identify one, two or more people who would be interested in knowing what Cabrini Connections or Tutor/Mentor Connection is doing, if someone encouraged them to…"

Mapping Your Network

Since interning at Cabrini Connections, my main focus has been reconnecting the alumni. The main "connector" has been a site I created on a ning page at www.cabriniconnectionsalumni.ning.com. Since its creation, more than 20 alumni have joined and I am hoping at least another zero will be added to the end of that number, if not more! The site is intended to provide information related to employment, education, and last but not least,…See More

"I think those answers you get at LIFT have something to do with low expectations in schools. Al Sharpton says low expectations is the new racism. We need teachers and school administrators who expect their students to go to college and be…"

"You make a strong argument, Emily. Do Promise Neighborhoods show any promise for breaking this diffusion of responsibility? i.e. are they structured in a way to foster community rather than accept apathy?"

The Harlem's Children Zone: Replicating it in Chicago

Last week I had the opportunity to attend an event that featured the author of the book “Whatever It Takes,” Paul Tough. In addition to having Mr. Tough as the headliner of the program, there were also four experts in four different fields: Barbara Bowman from Erikson Institute, Azim Ramelize from Department of Children and Youth Services, Chris Brown from Local Initiative Support Corporation, and someone from a Chicago Children’s Trauma Center. Paul Tough’s book was about a man named Geoffrey…See More

"Thank you for writing this Emily. I think TFA is doing great work, by getting students from top colleges to teach in high poverty areas for a few years. This provides a personal connection that I hope keeps these people glued to this issue for the…"

Making an Impact

After living and volunteering in Chicago, I noticed there was something wrong with our education system. Why were there so many people coming into the resource center where I volunteer (LIFT Chicago) and filling out the education section on their intake forms so similarly? The majority of the clients fall into the categories of “completed some high school,” or “completed high school.” When I ask if they had interest in getting their GED or going to college or a vocational school, the responses…See More

Cabrini Connections Alumni Page Update

As many of you know, my main task while working at my internship is to reconnect the alumni so that we (and themselves) can continue to provide additional support. I am trying to harness the power and potential of the internet and all the social networking sites that have become amazingly popular by creating a Ning page (a social networking site) specifically for alumni. So far we have nine members, including myself. I am expecting that number to increase after connecting with alumni via…See More

Journal Entry

For my Human Services Internship class, I am required to write weekly journal entries regarding my experience at my internship site. Each journal is supposed to include teh six steps of the Integrative Processing Model Model of Experiential Learning by Dr. Pamela Myers Kiser. The following are the six steps: (1) describing some event observed at intership site, (2) reflecting on personal reaction to event, (3) identifying specific concepts, theories, principles, and reaserach findings that are…See More

About Me:
This will be my first semester as an intern at Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection. I will be focusing on connecting with volunteer and student alumni to not only see how they are doing since their time at CC, but to also connect them to the resources available online and with each other. I will also be helping to plan events that will bring alumni together.

I am currently a senior at Loyola University Chicago and I am very excited about graduating this May 2010. Outside of school and interning here, I work as a campus campaign coordinator for Teach For America and volunteer at a resource center in the Uptown community called LIFT.
What do you hope to learn, or share, on this forum?

Below are links to two presentations that illustrate goals and strategies for helping our alumni. We don't have funds, or volunteers dedicated to this right now, but your involvement can help us move forward on these goals.

Cabrini Connections eLearning Goals shows how we want to use the Internet as a tool our students and volunteers use between 7th and 12th grade, and continue to use the rest of their lives.

Hi, Emily. I'm Kudo working here, either. I hope this internship would be good chance to learn anything associated with your job. Even though we have differences in terms of our part of work, I want to share any information with you. See you

Welcome Emily. Browse around the site and introduce yourself to other interns who are from Loyola and other colleges. Use your profile page to introduce yourself, and the messages feature to ask me or others questions. I'll see you in the office on Tuesday.
