I attended a workshop on Friday at UIC where you and others showed work you have done in the past year. I introduced myself and told how my organization has hosted students from the U. Michigan Alternative Spring Break Program for the past three years.

I encourage you to visit http://tutormentorconnection.ning.com/group/universityofmichiganschoolofinformation09 where you can learn who was involved in the past, and see the type of work they were doing.

At these links you can see how I use these projects in the on-going work of helping inner city kids have access to high quality volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs.
* http://www.tutormentorexchange.net/definition-of-issues/ideasanimation
* http://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2010/05/stop-violence-have-plan.html

Each of you expressed a long-term commitment to social justice and making a difference in your introductions. I've been leading a volunteer-based tutor/mentor program for 35 years. Solving complex problems in many parts of the world will take the life-long involvement of many people in many places.

On our web sites the projects we host are intended to serve as a platform that thousands, or even millions, of people can use to support their own leadership and involvement in many places. My goal in writing is to encourage one or more of you to begin to use the T/MC portal to see how we apply visualization strategies, so you might think of yourselves in the same role as I've taken. You may not end up focusing on poverty, or youth mentoring, but the same process of collecting and sharing information is needed in any cause you may become committed to.

The projects shown on our Ning site were done in one week, or in a few weeks. they are not the result of on-going partnerships with the School of Information, or with any business. As more and more of you and your peers join in the Tutor/Mentor Connection forum, my hope is that you will help us build these long-term partnerships so that when students come to us, they are part of a relay of students who have come before them, and who will follow them in the future.

Because of the Internet, anyone can stay involved with a cause, regardless of where they live in the world. This offers tremendous potential for your work in any of the causes you adopt now or in the future.

If such partnerships are established, it is more likely that you and other students will also stay involved as you move through your life and your careers. This project done by Li Li in February illustrates how long term involvement increases the ways the volunteer helps the charity. http://www.tutormentorexchange.net/images/flash/vol_leadership.swf

As you look at these projects, and the work we do, please introduce yourself if you would like to get personally involved in one or more of the projects, or if you have suggestions for other work that could be done to support the growth of high-quality volunteer-based tutoring/mentoring programs in more places.

Thank you for reading and for sharing your stories on Friday.

Daniel F. We will have a new intern with us during the first week of March. She is Li Li a grad student in the school of informatics from the University of Michigan.

The project I'd like Li Li to work on is based on this blog article. The article shows how some volunteers become leaders and advocates as a result of the bonds they build with youth, and the coaching they get from the leaders of a tutor/mentor program.

The timing of this project is really good. We're in February when many volunteers are burning out, and programs need to find replacements. If we can get volunteers to network with each other, and think of the reasons they volunteered in the first place, many of them will be re-energized. If we can get some of them to inventory their skills, and think of all the ways they can help make their tutor/mentor program better, we start a process that can grow from now till the end of the year and on into the coming year.

This graphic illustrates the entire process.

This is a cycle that repeats from year to year. As the volunteer grows his understanding and commitment, he does more to engage the people he knows as volunteers, donors, leaders. This not only can help a single program grow, it can help all of the programs serving a single city grow.

My hope is that Li Li can create an animation, such as this, that illustrates this idea in ways that make it easier for volunteers, business leaders and donors to understand, and respond to.

We'll post the finished project on the Tutor/Mentor Institute, and the Tutor/Mentor Conference, and on our blogs, so that more people will see it. Hopefully some people will respond by attending the May 27 and 28 and future conferences, to learn how they can apply this strategy in their own tutor/mentor program, or from their own business and professional group.

I've not discussed this with Li Li yet, so as she reads this she will begin to think of ways to interpret it visually. She may also have other project ideas in mind, based on the other articles she has reviewed on our web sites.

Watch this space over the next few weeks and you can see how we take an idea, add an intern, and create something new that can be used by people all over the world.

If you're at a university, high school or business and you want to create visualizations for the Tutor/Mentor Connection, join in the discussion. More than one person can interpret the same ideas. The result can be many perspectives of the same concept, leading to better understanding and response by more people.

That is a good thing.

Interns wanted. Work with us in Chicago, or work from your home university.tag:tutormentorconnection.ning.com,2009-04-06:783429:Topic:69352009-04-06T20:26:14.000ZDaniel Bassillhttp://tutormentorconnection.ning.com/profile/tutormentor

Hi,

Ms. Garima Garg and myself have prepared a visualization of the map on this link . Our visualization of this concept shows a series of animated objects through which the user moves based on his selection, and hence can comprehend the information piecemeal, rather than being overwhelmed with the entire map at once.

The things that can be added to our visualization are:

1. This visualization can me mapped to further levels in the map, creating an animated version of each of the maps following the first one.

2. Due to the shortage of time we were not able to make a voice over for our visualization, this could be another extension of our work.

3. Some technical difficulties on the last day, prevented us from putting all the links to the pages on the ovals, this can be completed by putting in a little effort.

Our work can be viewed here.

More about the ASB experience can be read soon at this link and over here.

The source of this visualization is attached below. Work we are planning on doingtag:tutormentorconnection.ning.com,2009-02-25:783429:Topic:56892009-02-25T17:30:22.000ZMalhar Guptahttp://tutormentorconnection.ning.com/profile/MalharGupta
Hi,

Ms. Garima and I are working on making the village chart more intuitive by adding animation which would filter and give information to user's as and when they ask for it, rather than presenting the entire chart all at once.
