A goal of Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC) has been to help similar groups form in other cities. This group was started for that purpose, but has not grown. If you'd like to re-energize it, just join in and introduce yourself. Below is original introduction.

Welcome to this networking group for Los Angeles T/MC. I hope to encourage the development of a Program Locator and Resource Directory for this region. Please feel free to join the list or email me directly with your referrals or suggestions.

When Nalini contacted me a couple of years ago her goal was to build a directory of tutor/mentor programs serving LA, and to support them the way T/MC is trying to do in Chicago. Since she did not have a partner, we agreed set up a place on the T/MC web site where programs in LA could add their web site link. Here is that location.

To add a web site, you need to register, then log in. then submit a link for approval. You can choose what part of LA to show your link. At the bottom of each page is a "submit new entry" button.

If you can encourage a growing number of LA groups to add their link to the T/MC page, and join you here, you can use this space to collaborate and share ideas that we hope will benefit each of your organizations.

What is the funding climate for tutor/mentor non profits in California? With the state budget in dire shape, it must be tough. What are programs doing to recruit volunteers in August and Sept?

There are lots of celebrities talking about mentoring in January for National Mentoring Month. We need them to step forward as school starts, and not only talk about volunteering, but of providing dollars for operations of the programs where volunteers engage with kids.

Any thoughts?

Val, please introduce yourself to Nalini. Maybe the two of you can increase the participation of West Coast leaders and donors in this forum.

I encourage you and others to read about this major foundation commitment by a group of California Foundations:

If you can build a T/MC like database and network of purpose focused on LA and other California cities, you might be able to get these foundations to channel their donations through your maps and database to hundreds of tutor/mentor programs throughout the state.

I have two interns from Korea working with me this month. They have set up a group at http://tutormentorconnection.ning.com/group/cktmc

If you know programs serving Korean or Asian youth in LA, why not introduce them?

My name is Nalini Lasiewicz and I manage a non-profit group called the Lasiewicz Foundation. We encourage civic participation, early childhood music education, and the expansion of tutoring and mentoring programs. Such programs are crucial in connecting the talents of individuals and businesses in the larger community with schools, children and teens throughout our region. Dan Bassil has opened a web page for Los Angeles so that we can begin to build our regional network, using the T/MC portal. I hope you'll join me in the effort! Please feel free to contact me here or by phone at (818) 249-9691.
