Future of Tutor/Mentor Connection

Tutor/Mentor Connection is reorganizing. Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC has been created to support growth of T/MC in Chicago and other cities. This space is to share ideas and connect people who are helping with this.

Thanks to all of our holiday donors.

In April 2011 the Board of Directors of Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC) voted to no-longer support the T/MC strategy and separate the two parts of the organization.

In July 2011 Dan Bassill  has resigned his role as President, CEO of the combined organization and created Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC to support the continued operations of the T/MC as a non-profit serving the Chicago region, and to provide ideas, tools, services, etc. to support the growth of T/MC type intermediaries in other cities.

While this group was originally created to support fund raising, I'd like to now re-purpose it as a place where volunteers who are helping think through this transition can meet and be known to others besides myself.  If you no longer want to be part of this group please remove yourself.

This concept map shows the four-part strategy of the Tutor/Mentor Institute and the work that we're trying to do. I've had interns writing about these ideas in the past and this is one role anyone can take to help.

We have a new fund raising blog, with links to each of the major events for the year. So while the feature article shows the current Cabrini Madness campaign, the volunteers who are focusing on future events, can use this blog to point to those events.

We have four upcoming events.

Art Festival - april 16

Conference, May 27 and 28

Year end dinner, June 10

Golf Benefit, July 15

Each offers an opportunity for supporters to make donations of $100 to $5000. People will do this, if they are asked by someone they know, and trust.

That's the role of all of our volunteers, especially our fund raising and marketing volunteers. Build a list of people you know from family, college, home town, work, etc. who have the ability to make these donation. Then find a way to build their interest in tutoring/mentoring, and the work we're doing at Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection.

Here are some blogs on fund raising to read for ideas of how to build support for a non profit.

Thanks for your help.

(PS) if you're from another non profit, these ideas can be used by you where you are. In fact, if you recruit a team of volunteers you can set up a ning page, or a group in this site, and do what we're doing to focus help on your own community.

This is one of the holiday graphics that teens at Cabrini Connections are creating during the Tuesday evening tech club. If any of you would like to use these in raising funds for us, I can give you jpgs or you can copy them from our sites as we post them.

This Friday, Oct. 9, we'll host our annual Martini Madness event in Chicago. We expect 75 to 100 people. Should be a good time.

For those who cannot attend, we've set up a Martini Madness fund raising page. I hope you'll make a donation and encourage others to do the same.

We've set up a group page on the GiveForward web site which you can find at http://www.giveforward.org/CabriniTMC/

This is a place where anyone who wants to help, can set up an event and raise money from friends and family to support Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection.

If you want to support a different tutor/mentor program, the site makes it easy to set up a cause page to do that.

I've posted this image on our blogs and will be sending it via email to about 1300 people on our database. If you'd like to create a different Back to School graphic that you feel would prompt donors to respond better than this, please do so and share it here. Maybe others can use it too.

We've had a growing number of people join this forum. Now I hope you'll each take a role in building conversations around the themes and mission of this site.

Have you every been a volunteer, leader, board member, donor, or student in a tutor/mentor program?

What is the difference between a pure tutor, pure mentor, or combined tutor/mentor program?

Do you work at a business, university, hospital w here you might influence the involvement of other people in programs in your community? Is there a database of programs that people can search for volunteer opportunities?

These can all be topics for discussions. Feel free to submit your own. Please keep them focused on volunteerism, tutoring and/or mentoring, workforce development, philanthropy, etc.

The next Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference will be held in Chicago on May 29 and 30. On the website is a list of attendees, which you can vew to see who is attending. If you click on a person's name, you can send them a message, and make arrangements to meet.

We hope this helps people attending the conference to meet and network with more of the people who they wanted to meet from a conference like this. We also hope it encourages continued networking after the conference.

If you are attending the conference, why not introduce yourself here and talk about your program, your interests, and what you hope to gain from your networking.
